The numbers are in! Arkansas medical marijuana patients spent a total of $24 million in the month of November on supplies from statewide dispensaries. This number is less than 2023’s November rake-in. Profits made by Arkansan dispensaries in 2024 have been significantly less then in 2023, despite the fact that business is booming. The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (ADFA) cites the reason that price points have dropped (and may continue to do so), but weight sold has increased, reflecting greater benefits to patients statewide. Cannabis sales in 2023 totaled $283 million- meanwhile sales for 2024 (January-November) have only reached $251.9 million. It seems unlikely that the $31.1 million dollar gap will be closed before the New Year, but statistics for December have not yet been released.
Whether or not sales increase in 2025 depends on a number of ongoing changes within the industry, one of the most impactful being the continuous rise of active medical marijuana patient cards. “The two state taxes on medical marijuana have generated $28.5 million in 2024, with the overall amount since the industry launched now approaching $150 million,” said Scott Hardin, spokesperson for the ADFA. “The number of medical marijuana patient cards continues to increase. We began the year with 97,374 cards and the Department of Health now reports 109,095 active cards.”
