Dear Ethel,
Medical marijuana is being used to treat mental health conditions like PTSD. Is there any chance that marijuana could make someone’s mental health worse?
Sincerely,
Cautiously Curious
Dear Cautiously Curious,
Cannabis has shown to be extremely effective at relieving the horrible symptoms caused by all types of traumas in most patients, including but not limited to insomnia, depression, and anxiety. Patients with other mental conditions and PTSD have also noted relief of symptoms of those conditions. However, just like every other mind-altering substance, patients suffering from a mental condition that is not a qualifying condition, should approach cannabis with caution and are urged to discuss its effects with their primary mental healthcare professional, due to the lack of studies on cannabis and mental health conditions.
We absolutely encourage you to also find a physician that is well educated in the endocannabinoid system. Would you believe that your PCP didn’t study this in med school? It’s true. We have several physicians here in our natural state that have made it their life work and are an excellent resource.
We happen to have an ‘Ask Ethel’ therapist that is researching these very effects for her patients. If you are interested in her modality regarding your mental health wellness and how it relates to cannabis, please let us know, and we will get you in touch with her.
Love,
Ethel
Dear Ethel,
Can marijuana have a positive effect on neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s?
Sincerely,
Neuro-Naut
Dear Neuro-Naut,
The short answer is yes. Patients have reported a decrease in Alzheimer’s related agitation. Parkinson’s is a qualifying condition in most states, but not in our home state. However, many qualifying patients that also have Parkinson’s have reported a decrease in Parkinson’s related tremors and stiffness.
As with anything, it is recommended to speak to professionals and how cannabis correlates with anything you might be suffering with. It’s truly imperative for your journey.
All my best,
Ethel
