The mummy of Ramses II was initially buried in a tomb in The Valley Of the Kings. In 1881, his mummy was discovered among a cache of pharaohs and other royal family members found in Deir el-Bahari, near the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut. Often referred to as Ramses the Great, his mummy is one of the most famous mummies from ancient Egypt.
In 1981, scientists examined his mummy. They found that the linen wrappings used on his mummy were coated in hemp pollen, proving that the cannabis plant existed in Egypt at the time of his death. Further testing of other mummies found THC in the lungs, leading researchers to believe the cannabis plant was used for medical purposes before their death.
While proof of the cannabis plant in ancient Egypt has been found, the use and purposes in the civilization continue to be a topic of debate, sparking ongoing discussions and research.
